Are you in a situation where you either don’t know how to use a weed grinder or don’t have one handy and need to learn how to grind weed without a grinder? If so, you’ve come to the right place!
We’ve all been there. You’re about ready to sesh, the anticipation is building, your senses are alight, and your mouth may even be watering, only to discover that you don’t have the necessary grinding materials.
Don’t worry. All hope is not lost!
Just in case you can’t get your hands on a buster, we’re here to save the day with methods for how to grind weed without a grinder.
How to Grind Weed Without a Grinder
1. Pill Bottle and Coins
This method is one of the easiest. All you’re going to need is an old pill bottle, a film canister, or another similarly sized plastic container with the same build and detachable lid, and a coin, preferably the size of a dime or nickel, at least.
First things first, be sure to disinfect and wash the coin thoroughly as they are usually super dirty, and you probably don’t know where it’s been. All in all, you likely don’t want all of that nasty stuff in your joints!
From there, fill the pill bottle, film canister or other plastic container three-quarters full with your bud and add in a small coin. Be careful not to pack the container too full, or else there won’t be enough room for the weed and coin to move around when you shake it.
Once filled, place the lid back on the container and shake the coin and bud vigorously for roughly a minute or two. The bouncing of the coin will collide with the weed in the bottle, thus breaking the bud apart.
If you don’t have any spare change lying around to use for this technique, a similarly sized object with a bit of weight to it should work just as effectively.
2. Scissors and a Shot Glass
This method is a particular favourite amongst the cannabis community as most households have the two instruments necessary to make it work. That, and it’s incredibly straightforward in terms of performing it correctly.
In other words, it’s pretty hard to mess up or get it wrong!
For those astute readers out there, it won’t take long to determine what you’re going to need for this technique to grind weed without a grinder – scissors and a shot glass!
For this method, all you’ll need to do is place a nug or two of weed into the glass and use the scissors to cut and break it apart. If you’re in a real pinch and don’t have a shot glass, you can use another type of glass.
However, shot glasses are the most practical because their smaller size makes them easier to control while the scissors are slicing and dicing.
That said, it’s ideal that the glass be made of, well, glass. Bits of other materials, such as plastic or paper, may manage to sleep their way into your weed, which is not fun to inhale and could potentially be dangerous.
3. Knife and Cutting Board
For tokers who are more inclined in the culinary arts, or if the weed you’re working with is particularly dry, you could opt for the tried and true knife and cutting board method as a means to grind your weed without a grinder.
A reliable chef’s knife is always a good option if you don’t mind a little THC on there. Even still, you can always just wash it afterwards.
Use the “Rock n’ Chop” approach for the best and safest method of busting up your weed. If you’re not sure how to hold a knife properly and are worried, stay away and keep your fingers intact.
You can just as easily break apart your bud with your bare hands and spare yourself the potential injury.
4. Coffee Grinder
You’ve heard of using a coffee grinder to bust up your coffee beans, sure, but did you know that it’s also a super useful method for grinding weed without a grinder?
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. It works the same way as it would with coffee, with the added benefit of providing a coarser grind than if you were to stick your weed in a blender.
If you’re new to the world of weed, you may not know, so let us fill you in!
Basically, if you grind your weed too finely, you run the higher risk of accidentally inhaling your bud rather than taking a hit. So, using a coffee grinder is an easy way to ensure that the bud is still coarse enough to burn smoothly, so you’re inhaling what you actually want.
If you plan on using your coffee grinder for its intended purpose the next day, be sure to clean it thoroughly once you’re finished using it to bust up your weed. Your grinder will collect tons of kief from the intense grinding process.

5. Your Hands
While it may seem a bit less civilized than other methods, you can always opt to use your hands if you’re in a pinch and need to grind weed without a grinder.
If you do use your hands, simply remove the stem from the rest of the bud and work from the most narrow part at the top downwards to the wider base. Rather than just pulling the bud apart willy-nilly, use your fingers to pick away at it until smaller, more manageable chunks are removed.
As you word your hands down to the base, use your fingernails to pick smaller pieces out. Using your hands is a practical alternative to a grinder, and you’ll never have to worry about not having those two pieces of equipment.
If you do, then you have bigger problems than how to grind weed without a grinder!
That said, make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly before using them to break apart your weed. After all, you don’t want to have all the dirt, gunk and bacteria under your nails or on your skin to get into your weed!
Grind it Up
Don’t let a lack of buster keep you away from grinding your weed up nice and fine.
